Day 2: Delhi - Agra Distance: (230 kms | 4 ½ hrs)

Agra (Agra was once the capital of the Mughal empire and even today it seems to linger in the past. Not surprising, for the Mughal emperors with their passion for building, endowed the city with some of the finest structures in the world. It is very easy to slip away here through the centuries into the grandeur and intrigues of the Mughal court. Agra is an old city and it is said that its name was derived from Agra- bana, a forest that’s finds mention in the epic. In more recent times Agra came into prominence when Si- kandar Lodi made it his capital city in 1501. The Lodi rule was to end very soon and Agra passed into the possession of the Mughals. It was during the time of the third emperor Akbar that Agra came into its own).

On arrival, proceed to your hotel for check-in and freshen-up.

Later on, after lunch (on your own), you will proceed to visit Agra Fort (Near the gardens of the Taj Ma- hal stands the important 16th-century Mughal monument known as the Red Fort of Agra. Often, the Agra Fort is overshadowed by the pristine beauty of the Taj, but for those looking for something beyond ro- mance, the Agra Fort is worth seeing. Built in red stone, the Agra fort stretches almost two kilometers on the bank of the Yamuna. A huge wall that stands 69 ft in height encircles the crescent shaped fort).

In the evening Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally ad- mired masterpieces of the world's heritage. Defined as "A Tear on the Face of Eternity", this white splendored tomb was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his favourite wife, Arjumand Banu Begum, better known as Mumtaz Mahal ("Chosen of the Palace").

It is one of the finest examples of the culmination of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Fatehpur Sikri Mosque is said to be a copy of the mosque in Mecca and has designs, derived from the Persian & Hindu architecture).

Jaipur (Jaipur was born when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, a Kacchawa Rajput decided to build a royal city that would serve as the capital of his kingdom in Amber. The Mughals bestowed Jai Singh with the title of Sawai that means 'the one who knows all'. Jaipur was the first city in Rajasthan that acknowledged Mugh- al presence and struck a political alliance with them. Today, the city of Jaipur is the prime example of the culture and tradition of the Rajputana Empire. Being the capital of Rajasthan, the city is mirror to every- thing that Rajasthan signifies, be its culture, tradition, society, and, most important, the people).

Its construction was started by Man Singh I in 1592 and completed by his descendant Jai Singh I. Its rugged forbidding exterior belies an inner paradise where a beautiful fusion of Mughal and Hindu styles finds its ultimate refinement. Painted scenes of hunting and war adorn the walls with precious stones and mirrors set into the plaster. In the foreground is the Maota Lake with breath taking reflections of the magnificent Amber Palace).
